Encased/Oculus

Light is a medium with both spatial and temporal qualities. Often these are inseparable even if our perception of the temporal aspects are often only observed through the qualities of light shifting.

Of particular interest to me here is thinking about light as an inert medium; the light of Encased is more like a gel, a liquid, a solid even. It fills the space and creates stasis. By removing easily observable temporality in the light, only motion through the space exists, though even in motion the subject is stuck, trapped in the light.

As interested as I am in the light that takes on this static quality, so too am I interested in light creating a sense of place. The interior is of one quality, and the outside world another as it peeks in through the window. The window here takes on its own unique forms. It is a portal by which we observe and are observed. It transports light. Oculus is the window, Oculus is the eye; The window is an intermediary, light can pass through either direction. It is as much a way out of the room as it is a taunting reminder that it is beyond reach.
