Artist Statement

Swimming in the Shallows moves between defined and undefined spaces with an effortlessness that belies the struggle its characters experience as they attempt to define themselves against a world of stuff, of other’s expectations, and expectations of themselves.

Lighting here gives these spaces differentiation, while allowing for abstraction in each moment; it does not necessarily matter that we know that we are in a bar or a front yard, but it does matter that these atmospheres are palpable to those who inhabit them.
