Artist Statement

The lighting design for Emma vibrates with a prismatic approach to color. Saturate color is the dominant quality of our transitional spaces which settle into more pseudo-realistic lighting within each scene’s locale. This settling contains undertones of that saturate color and dramatic angle, which captures a sense of opulence, boldness, and bombast.

This crystalline nature refracts light into sweeping gestures that are specific to each scene, but reference back to the whole.

Elements like the practical chandelier and scones transform from period appropriate elements of the scene into colorful focal points of a dance club in transitional moments. Illuminated stained glass moves from static structures communicating sophistication, to kinetic, chromatic vistas.

Characters stand boldly in these spaces through distinct halos, sharp keys, and soft fills inspired by the striking contrast of fashion photographer Sarfo Emmanuel Annor and Kawaii/Gyaru Japanese streetwear.

In sum, the lighting seeks to capture a feeling of play, of unabashed adornment and of youthful exuberance.
