Artist Statement

How The Light Gets In explores the unusual relationships that can be forged in fragile states of being. Grace grapples with her own mortality when she receives a cancer diagnosis. It is at this very moment that three people come into her life who's own personal experiences with loss help Grace contextualize her own grief in new and profound ways. This play takes place entirely in the Japanese Garden in which Grace volunteers as a docent, and as the playwright dictates: "Light and sound will take use everywhere we need to go." With this in mind, the quality of light had to carry the sense of dread or comfort that Grace associates with those spaces; the dappled golden sunlight of the garden giving way to the harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital waiting room in the dead of night.
