Artist Statement
Head Over Heels takes the melodramatic story of The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia and modernizes it into a contemporary tale of queer love, self-discovery, and celebration.
Set to a jukebox soundtrack of hits from The Go-Go’s, Head Over Heels is like an exuberant pop-rock concept album put to stage.
It feels like a prism, where the component parts at once form a whole but can also be seen in miraculous color in isolation.
The lighting design for this production took inspiration from 1970s and 80s rock shows including, but not limited to, The Go-Go’s as well as the liminality of chart music shows like the UK’s Top of the Pops, which often placed the band performing on a abstract stage shape and complimented this with geometric patterns, beam art, and candy colors which, for this production, were references from The Go-Go’s album cover designs.
